For many people, washing clothes is an automatic act. Dirty laundry? Into the washing machine it goes. But often, clothes aren't truly dirty – just a bit wrinkled, musty, or worn. Yet, we pour liters of water, detergent, and energy down the drain.
That's why we wondered: can your clothes stay clean, fresh, and presentable for 30 days without washing, purely by steaming?
We put it to the test – with surprising results.
The Rules of the Flowsteam Challenge
For this test, we selected 4 participants with different lifestyles:
-
Joris (29) – IT consultant, 5 days a week in office attire
-
Marleen (35) – Mother of 2, part-time nurse
-
Sanne (22) – Student, frequently at festivals and cafes
-
Koen (40) – Work-from-home illustrator
They each received a Flowsteam portable garment steamer and had to adhere to the following rules:
-
No washing clothes for 30 days (except underwear and socks)
-
Wear clothes from their normal wardrobe every day
-
Steam after use instead of washing
-
Air out or hang clothes after steaming
Week 1 – The Relief
The first week was surprisingly positive. Participants noticed how often they normally washed clothes out of habit, not necessity.
“My blouse smelled a bit like perfume and was wrinkled. Normally I would throw it in the wash, but after 2 minutes of steaming, it was fresh and smooth.” – Joris
Steaming worked exceptionally well, especially for synthetic fabrics and wool. Wrinkles disappeared quickly, and odors like smoke or food were effortlessly removed.
Week 2 – Minor Obstacles
In the second week, some challenges arose:
-
Stains: A few coffee stains on a pair of trousers required more than steam. Participants used a damp cloth or stain roller for these.
-
Sweat marks: Especially on warm days or in the armpits of shirts, odors sometimes lingered. However, no one reported extreme discomfort.
-
Psychology: The idea of "unwashed" sometimes felt unfamiliar, even though the clothes smelled and looked clean.
“I really had to get used to the idea that my clothes could be clean without washing them.” – Marleen
Week 3 – The New Normal
In week three, something remarkable changed. Participants grew accustomed to steaming as a routine. Hanging up clothes in the evening, a quick steam, ready for tomorrow.
Additional benefits:
-
No laundry to hang or fold
-
Quicker in the morning
-
Clothes stayed looking good longer (no fading or shrinkage)
“I’ve worn my wool sweater 4 times already, and it still looks perfect. Normally, I would have washed it unnecessarily often.” – Koen
Week 4 – Results and Insights
At the end of the 30 days, we asked participants for their findings. Here are the main conclusions:
What worked well:
-
Steaming replaced washing for 70-80% of their garments
-
Odors completely disappeared in almost all cases
-
Clothes looked smooth, well-kept, and new
-
Time and water savings were enormous (avg. 10 washes saved per person)
What worked less well:
-
Underwear, socks, and sportswear still needed to be washed
-
Stains had to be removed manually
-
White cotton T-shirts started to smell slightly yellowish towards the end
Facts: Environmental and Cost Savings
Based on this test, we calculated the impact:
| Factor | Average savings per person in 30 days |
|---|---|
| Washes | 8 to 12 fewer washes |
| Water consumption | ± 500 liters less |
| Electricity | ± 4 kWh less |
| Detergent | ± 400 ml less used |
| Wear and tear on clothes | Less pilling, no fading |
On an annual basis, this amounts to:
-
6000 liters less water
-
Up to €100 savings on electricity and detergent
-
Longer lifespan for garments
The Final Verdicts
-
Joris: "I'll definitely keep doing this. It works perfectly, especially for my shirts."
-
Marleen: "As a mother, time is scarce. This really saves me a lot of hassle."
-
Sanne: "My outfits smell fresher after steaming than after washing. Weird, right?"
-
Koen: "I was always a minimalist washer. Now even more so."
All four indicated that they would permanently change their washing habits – for example, only doing laundry once a week from now on, and daily use of the Flowsteam for refreshing.
What You Can Take Away From This
This challenge proves that steaming clothes is a realistic alternative to excessive washing. Especially for delicate, lightly soiled garments, it is a sustainable and practical choice.
You don't have to radically stop washing for 30 days. But if you wash 3 fewer garments each week, you'll already make a big difference on an annual basis.
